Headers, footers, and navigation
Site chrome, menu targets, and the footer that appears on every page.
Quick start
- Open
/portfolios/theme-edit/[pid]and show Layers. Click Footer in Site chrome. - In the sidebar, turn Visible on. Optionally set Layout, Show wordmark, and Copyright.
- Click Site menu, confirm Visible is on, open Menu links, and enable one row (Show in menu) or click Add link.
- Click Save, then Preview.
- You should see the footer on the page and that menu label in the bar (or the mobile drawer).
Header, Site menu, and Footer are site chrome: they appear on every page. You cannot drag them into a page group in Layers. Order of page content: Layers and section order.
Deep dive
Site chrome vs page content
Chrome sits outside the scroll list for Home or an extra page. Visitors see the same header, menu, and footer on every public page.
Menu labels are the text you set in Menu label. They are not copied from page titles automatically.
How to open the editor and save: Theme editor overview.
Header
Click Header in Layers. The shipped controls are:
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Visible | Shows or hides the header on every page. |
| Layout | How the brand sits with the site menu. |
| Logo source | None, Profile photo, or Hero image. |
| Show wordmark / Wordmark | Name text next to the logo. Blank Wordmark uses your name. |
| Logo alt text | Accessible name for the logo. Defaults to the wordmark or your name. |
| Alignment | Start, Center, or End. |
Layout still chooses which style controls appear. Do not treat this as a full layout catalog — Section styles.
Site menu
Click Site menu. Turn Visible on so visitors see the bar. Desktop shows a horizontal row; small screens use a hamburger drawer. Those drawer items are real links — the same destinations as desktop.
Open Menu links to choose what appears:
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Show in menu | Includes that row in the public menu. Locked extra-page rows stay saved but hidden. |
| Menu label | Visitor-facing text. Leave empty to use the section or page title. |
| Add link / Change link | Opens the panel. Link type is Page, Section, or External link. |
Use Move up / Move down to set menu order. That is not the same as page scroll order in Layers.
Menu target types
| Type (UI label) | What it does |
|---|---|
| Page | Opens that page (Home or a Plus extra page). No in-page jump. |
| Section | Jumps to a section. If that section lives on another page, the link opens that page first, then scrolls. |
| External link | A full public https:// website only. Not javascript:, files, or internal hosts. |
For External link, the field is Link URL. Turn on Open in a new tab only when you want a new tab. Otherwise the link stays in the same tab.
On the public page:
- A Page link has no hash. The current page’s link is the active page.
- A Section link on this page scrolls in place. On another page it opens that URL, then scrolls. The section in view can show as the active in-page item.
- An External link opens the URL (new tab only when that option is on).
Plus: extra page links can show. Free and Pro: extra pages are not public. Leftover menu rows for those pages stay saved (status Needs the Plus plan) and return when Plus (multi-page-portfolio) is active again. Visitors do not see those rows in the meantime.
If a row says Missing target, the page or section no longer exists. Use Change link or Remove link.
Footer
Click Footer. The footer is hidden until you turn Visible on. Then #footer is a real landmark on every page. A call-to-action or menu jump to the footer can scroll there. If the footer is hidden, that jump does nothing useful — it does not show an error page.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Visible | Shows or hides the footer on every page. |
| Layout | Arrangement. Minimal is compact (wordmark, copyright, optional attribution). Centered and Columns also show the extended fields below. |
| Show wordmark / Wordmark | Brand text. Blank Wordmark uses your name. |
| Short copy | Optional tagline. Hidden on Minimal. |
| Show page links | Home and visitable extra pages. Hidden on Minimal. |
| Show contact links | Email, phone, and location from Privacy. Hidden fields never appear. Hidden on Minimal. |
| Show social links | Your Connect links. No separate social list. Hidden on Minimal. |
| Copyright | Blank uses © year and your name. |
| Show Portura attribution | When on, visitors see a Portura credit. This control is not plan-gated in the editor. |
Privacy toggles: Privacy, SEO, and analytics. Connect links: Extra sections.
Custom domain paths
On portura.ai, public paths look like /p/{slug} and /p/{slug}/{page}. On a connected custom domain they are / and /{page}. Setup and DNS stay in Custom domains — this article does not walk the wizard.
Pro connects the domain. Nested extra pages on that host are Plus. Without Plus, those paths go to that host’s Home.
Tips
- Set Menu label to the words visitors should tap — not your editor nickname.
- Keep the public menu short. Enable the pages and sections people need; leave the rest off.
- Turn the footer Visible before you add a jump to
#footer. - Match footer contact and social to Privacy and Connect so hidden profile fields stay hidden.
- Style chrome under Sections after you select Header, Site menu, or Footer in Layers.
Extra-page menu rows on Free or Pro are stored, not deleted. Upgrade to Plus to show them again.
Troubleshooting
The menu link does nothing useful
- Section links need that section on a page. Place it in Layers if it is unplaced.
- External link must be a full
https://public address. - A footer jump needs Visible on. Hidden footer:
#footerhas nowhere to go.
Extra page links vanished after I changed plans
- Rows for extra pages stay in Menu links with Needs the Plus plan. Visitors will not see them until Plus is active again.
Footer contact or social is empty
- Confirm Show contact links / Show social links and that Layout is not Minimal.
- Confirm Privacy shows email, phone, or location, and that Connect has links.
