Job match score

Generate a fit score and review strengths, gaps, and match history.

Quick start

  1. Sign in and open Job Descriptions (/job-descriptions).
  2. Choose the Portfolio you want to score against (defaults to your default portfolio).
  3. On a saved job card, click Generate score (or Regenerate score if you already have one).
  4. When the score appears, check the percent and rating band, then click View details to read strengths, gaps, and keyword overlap.
  5. You should now see a Match score for that portfolio and posting — and know where to open the details dialog.

Pro: Match scoring requires job-match-ai. If your plan does not include it, Generate score opens an upgrade dialog instead of running the analysis.

Deep dive

Choose the right portfolio first

Scores are stored per portfolio for each job description. The page Portfolio dropdown controls which portfolio Generate score uses. Switching portfolios can show a different score (or none) for the same posting.

If you have more than one portfolio, confirm the dropdown before you score. See Job Descriptions overview for how the list and card actions fit together.

Generate or regenerate a score

On the card, use Generate score in the action row, or the matching Generate Score / Regenerate Score item in the three-dot menu. While the run is in progress, the card shows Calculating match score….

When a score already exists for the selected portfolio, the button becomes Regenerate score. Regenerating replaces the latest result for that portfolio + job pair and records another run in match history (when your plan includes match AI).

Pro (job-match-ai): Free plans that lack this entitlement see the upgrade path instead of a score. Upgrade from the dialog or from SettingsBilling.

What the score shows

After a successful run, the card shows a Match score panel:

  • A percent (0–100) for overall fit against the selected portfolio
  • A rating band: Poor, Fair, Good, Strong, or Excellent
  • A View details button that opens Match Details

In Match Details you can review, at a glance:

AreaWhat it means for you
Overall matchSame percent as the card summary
Short written rationalePlain-language why the score landed where it did
Matched skillsSkills/themes that line up with the posting
JD keywords less prominent in your portfolioLexical gaps — useful signals, not an automatic edit checklist
Top keywordsHigh-signal terms from the analysis
Keyword overlapHow much vocabulary the job and portfolio share, plus shared / JD / portfolio keyword chips

Treat the score as guidance for fit and gaps — not a guarantee of hiring outcomes.

Inside Match Details, Match history lists prior runs for this job + portfolio (date, band, percent). When more than one run exists, you may see a short trend such as points vs the previous run.

Pro: History and trends use the same job-match-ai entitlement as scoring. Without that feature, you cannot generate scores or load history.

From a selected history run you can start Improve for this job to turn gaps into portfolio change proposals. That flow is covered in Improve portfolio for a job. Related articles below list only published Job search guides.

Tokens and billing

Generating or regenerating a match score uses AI tokens (usage credits). Allowances, account credit, and plan differences change over time — check the FAQ and Settings → billing. A dedicated Plans and tokens guide will cover this when Account & billing Help ships. This article does not hard-code prices or token counts.

Tips

  • Paste the full job posting into Description before you score — thin descriptions produce weaker fit analysis.
  • Set the Portfolio dropdown before Generate score when you manage more than one portfolio.
  • Use View details after every new score; the card summary alone hides strengths, gaps, and overlap.
  • Prefer Regenerate score after you update the portfolio or the saved JD text so the percent reflects current content.
  • After you understand the gaps, continue with Improve portfolio for a job rather than guessing which sections to edit.

On each job card, use the ? next to Generate score for a short reminder and a Learn more link to this article.

Troubleshooting

Generate score opens an upgrade dialog

  • Match scoring needs Pro (job-match-ai). Upgrade from the dialog or open SettingsBilling.

No score appears after I click Generate score

  • Confirm a Portfolio is selected — the app asks you to select one if none is set.
  • Wait for Calculating match score… to finish; network or temporary AI errors show a toast — try again.
  • Check token / credit availability on the FAQ or Settings → billing if runs keep failing.

The score looks wrong for this job

  • Confirm the Portfolio dropdown matches the site you meant to compare.
  • Open Edit on the card and verify Description includes the full posting.
  • Click Regenerate score after fixing portfolio content or the JD text.
