Import from document

Turn a PDF, Word, or text file into portfolio sections.

Quick start

  1. Sign in, open My Portfolios, then either:
    • Click Create Portfolio and use Start from document (Pro and Plus) in the create dialog, or
    • Click Edit on a portfolio you own to open /portfolios/edit/[pid], then use Import from document.
  2. In the editor, the sticky jump nav Import (owners only) scrolls to Import from resume. Import from document (section-import-document) sits immediately below. Expand it if it is collapsed.
  3. Click Upload Document (or drag and drop). Supported formats: PDF, DOCX, or TXT (max 5MB).
  4. Wait while Portura analyzes the file (“Analyzing your document…”). Review the Imported document draft dialog (editor) or Document draft panel (create dialog).
  5. Click Add to portfolio (editor) or Create From Document (create dialog) — or cancel to discard the draft.
  6. After save, check Projects, Experience, Content blocks, Embeds, and Hero. After create, you land in /portfolios/edit/[pid].

Import from document is a Pro and Plus feature. You can start from Create a portfolio (Start from document) or from the editor. Resume import stays available on every plan that has AI tokens — see Import from resume.

Deep dive

How this differs from resume import

If the file looks like a resume, Portura asks you to use Import from resume instead.

Upload and review

Under Add from document, Portura drafts sections from your file. You always review before saving.

  1. Upload or drop a file (PDF, DOCX, or TXT, max 5MB).
  2. The Imported document draft dialog lists proposed lists, content blocks, embeds, optional hero copy, and Plus extras when they apply.
  3. Confirm with Add to portfolio, or cancel to leave the live editor unchanged.

Nothing is written until you confirm.

What typically gets created

  • Headings that are clearly work samples, roles, schools, services, quotes, or credentials become projects, experience, education, services, testimonials, or certifications. Skills lists merge into skills.
  • Leftover narrative (process, about, FAQ) becomes content blocks (headline, optional subheadline, markdown body).
  • Allowlisted https URLs become embed sections — the same providers as the embed editor (YouTube, Calendly, Figma, Google Drive, and others). Ordinary website links stay in the markdown; they do not become embeds.
  • If summary, bio, or hero is empty, opening copy can fill them. Copy that already exists is left alone.
  • Plus only: a labeled clients, team, or pricing list, or a call-to-action with both a label and an https URL, can become extras. Pro does not receive those extras.

Results land on Home only. Extra pages are not created. Extra project or gallery instances are not created — default project and experience lists are used.

Plan limits

Pro and Plus include up to four content blocks and four embeds. Import uses whatever slots you still have. Career lists can still append when those slots are full. Clients, team, pricing, and CTA extras follow the Plus extras caps.

What stays unchanged

Gallery, extra pages, theme, privacy, avatar, and your portfolio URL are not rewritten. Existing summary, bio, and hero copy are not replaced. Unsupported URLs are skipped.

Tips

  • Use clear headings. A wall of unstructured notes may become one or two blocks.
  • Label work samples as projects, dated roles as experience, and so on when that is what they are.
  • Paste a YouTube or Calendly https link in the file when you want an embed.
  • After save, open the matching editor cards to rename, edit, or delete the new rows — see Services, testimonials, contact, embeds, blocks.
  • Editor chrome: Portfolio editor overview.

Cancel the draft dialog if anything looks wrong. Nothing is written until you click Add to portfolio.

Troubleshooting

I do not see Import from document

  • Confirm you opened Edit as the owner. Collaborators do not get Import.
  • The section is Pro and Plus. Free plans see an upgrade prompt instead of the upload control.
  • Expand Import from document from the jump nav — it may start collapsed when the portfolio already has content.

Upload says the file looks like a resume

  • Use Import from resume for CVs.
  • For a mixed file, copy the non-resume pages into a new PDF or TXT and try again.

No embed appeared for a URL

  • Only allowlisted hosts become embeds. A generic website stays as a markdown link inside a content block.
  • You may already be at the four embed cap.

Clients, team, pricing, or a CTA did not appear

  • Those extras are Plus (composable extras). Pro can still import projects, experience, and Home blocks.
  • You may already be at the extras instance cap for that kind.

Upload fails or the draft never opens

  • Use PDF, DOCX, or TXT only, and keep the file under 5MB.
  • Try a simpler export if the file is password-protected or image-only.
  • Retry Upload Document after the error message clears.
