Custom domains
Add, verify, and manage a custom domain for your portfolio.
Quick start
- Sign in on a plan that includes custom domains (Pro). Open Custom Domains from the workspace, or go to
/portfolios/custom-domains. - Choose a Portfolio, then click Add domain.
- In Add custom domain, enter your hostname in Custom domain (for example
portfolio.example.comorexample.com) and click Next. - On Point your domain to Portura, add the Routing record (required) in your DNS provider, then click Verify routing record. When it shows Verified, click Next: SSL setup.
- On Verify SSL DNS record, add the SSL verification record (required), click Verify DNS records, then Next: Connect domain.
- You should now see Finishing your domain setup while Portura issues SSL and connects the host. Status progresses through labels such as Issuing SSL certificate and Finalizing connection until Connected.
Pro: Custom domains require the custom-domain plan feature. Accounts without it are redirected to Settings → Billing (/settings/billing). Plan details: Plans and tokens, /pricing, and the FAQ (Analytics & domains).
Deep dive
Open Custom Domains and pick a portfolio
Signed-in owners with the entitlement land on /portfolios/custom-domains. The page title area shows Custom Domains, a short intro with an example like portfolio.yourname.com, and your plan usage (for example 0 of 1 custom domains used).
Use:
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Portfolio | Which portfolio’s domains you manage |
| Add domain | Starts the Add custom domain wizard (disabled at the plan limit) |
| Domain list | Hostname, status, Continue (when setup is incomplete), and remove |
The selected portfolio also shows its Portura Public URL (/p/[slug]) so you can compare the built-in path with your custom host. If you have no portfolios yet, the page shows No portfolios yet and a Go to portfolios link instead of the domain manager.
Pro gate and Billing redirect
The custom domains page checks your membership for custom-domain. Without that feature, the server redirects to /settings/billing — you do not get a Free partial UI. Upgrade and plan context: Plans and tokens. Current public comparisons: /pricing.
Add domain wizard (four steps)
The dialog title is Add custom domain. Steps match the on-screen progress:
- Enter hostname — Field label Custom domain; helper text prefers a subdomain unless you need the root domain. Placeholder examples use
portfolio.example.com or example.com. - Point your domain to Portura — Add the Routing record (required) (Name / Value as shown). Use DNS setup help for provider-specific steps, then Verify routing record. DNS changes can take a few minutes to propagate.
- Verify SSL DNS record — Add the SSL verification record (required). Portura also re-checks the routing record. Click Verify DNS records, then Next: Connect domain.
- Finishing your domain setup — SSL issuance and DNS propagation can take from a few minutes to more than an hour. You can close the dialog; Portura can email you when the domain is ready. If setup is still pending after an hour, remove the domain from the list and try again.
If verification cannot find records within the check window, the UI asks you to double-check DNS and click Verify again. For incomplete setups, the list shows Waiting for DNS with Continue to resume.
Open DNS setup help, pick your DNS provider, and keep the panel open while you edit records. Before you start, the panel suggests a short TTL (300 seconds / 5 minutes) when your provider allows it, and removing a conflicting A or CNAME at the same hostname first.
Root domains vs subdomains
The UI recommends a subdomain unless you need the root (apex) host. When Portura detects a root domain, it may show: This looks like a root domain. Some DNS providers require ALIAS/ANAME records at the apex. Follow the Name / Value values and DNS setup help for your provider — stay with the records and provider guides shown in the product.
Statuses on the list
| Status label | Meaning (high level) |
|---|---|
| Waiting for DNS | Routing / DNS setup still needed — use Continue |
| Issuing SSL | Certificate work in progress |
| Connecting | Final connection step |
| Active | Domain is connected (list legend also says Connected) |
| Setup stuck | Setup appears stale; remove and add again when ready |
| Failed | Needs attention — read any error text on the row |
Removing a domain opens Remove custom domain. Confirm with Remove domain — the host will stop pointing to your portfolio.
Public page on your custom host
A connected custom domain serves the same published portfolio as /p/[slug] — not a second site. Visitors open https://your-domain over HTTPS once status is Active / Connected. Connecting a domain is Pro. Nested extra pages on that host (https://your-domain/{pageSlug}) are Plus. Without Plus, those paths redirect to the custom-domain Home. Keep your slug and publish state accurate so both URLs stay in sync — see Nickname, URL, and pages and Preview and public page.
Privacy, branding, and Mira on a custom domain
Pro privacy extras in the editor can change what visitors see on a custom host (and related public surfaces):
- Remove Portura branding — hides the Portura header bar on your custom domain
- Hide visitor Mira chat — hides the Mira chat widget on the public portfolio — see Visitor Mira chat

Tips
- Prefer a subdomain (as the Custom domain helper suggests) unless you specifically need the apex host.
- Copy Name and Value from the dialog with the copy controls — small typos are the most common DNS miss.
- Use DNS setup help for your provider instead of guessing steps that only apply to one registrar.
- Watch plan usage on the header chip; Add domain disables when you hit the plan limit.
- Pair a memorable custom host with a clear
/p/[slug]in Nickname, URL, and pages. - On Custom Domains, use the ? next to the Custom Domains heading for a short reminder and a Learn more link back to this article.
Troubleshooting
Custom Domains sends me to Billing
- Your plan does not include custom domains. Open Plans and tokens or
/pricing, upgrade from Billing, then return to/portfolios/custom-domains.
I see “No portfolios yet”
- Create a portfolio from
My Portfolios, then reopen Custom Domains.
Verify cannot find my DNS records
- Confirm Name and Value match the dialog exactly (including apex
@when shown). - Wait a few minutes for propagation, then click Verify routing record or Verify DNS records again.
- Use DNS setup help and remove conflicting A/CNAME records at the same hostname if your provider shows a conflict.
Setup is stuck or still pending after an hour
- Close the dialog, remove the domain from the list if the UI allows it, then Add domain again.
- For Setup stuck, the confirm message explains that the setup appears stuck — remove it and add the domain again when you are ready.
Add domain is disabled
- You may be at your plan’s custom domain limit (tooltip on Add domain). Check usage on the page header and Plans and tokens.
