Resume and cover letter

Quick start

1. Sign in and open Job Descriptions (/job-descriptions).
2. Choose the Portfolio you want materials for (defaults to your default portfolio).
3. On a saved job card, click Generate resume. When it finishes, the button becomes Download resume — click it to save the DOCX file.
4. If your plan includes cover letters, click Generate cover letter, then Download cover letter for a second DOCX.
5. You should now have tailored Word files for that portfolio and posting — ready to open and edit locally.

Deep dive

Portfolio + job description drive the content

Resume and cover letter generation pull from the selected portfolio and the saved job’s Description (plus title and other JD fields). Paste the full posting before you generate so the AI can tailor keywords and emphasis.

Materials are stored per portfolio for each job. Switching the page Portfolio dropdown can show a different generate/download state for the same posting. See Job Descriptions overview for the list, selector, and card action map.

Scoring first is optional but useful — a job match score highlights gaps you may want to fix (or improve) before you generate. You can also open Improve portfolio for a job after a match if you want proposal-based portfolio edits first.

Generate, regenerate, and download

On each card, the middle and right buttons handle materials:

The three-dot More actions for this job menu mirrors these with Generate Resume / Regenerate Resume / Download Resume and the matching cover letter items. While a run is in progress, the card shows Generating resume… or Generating cover letter….

When a file already exists for the selected portfolio, the on-card button switches to Download. Use the card menu Regenerate Resume or Regenerate Cover Letter when you update the portfolio or JD and want a fresh draft.

File format: DOCX

Portura downloads resumes and cover letters as DOCX (Microsoft Word) files — not PDF from this workspace today. Open the file in Word, Google Docs, or another editor that supports DOCX, then adjust formatting before you apply.

Cover letter Pro gate

Pro (ai-cover-letter): Free plans that lack this entitlement see the upgrade path for cover letter generate and download. Upgrade from the dialog or from Settings → Billing.

Resume generate and download do not use the ai-cover-letter gate. Match scoring is a separate entitlement (job-match-ai) — see Job match score.

Storage and media quota

Generated resume and cover letter files are application downloads for the job workflow. They are not the same as uploads in your media library. For how media quota works (and what counts toward it), see the FAQ — do not assume every downloaded file uses storage the same way as portfolio images or PDFs you upload.

Tokens and billing

Generating or regenerating a resume or cover letter uses AI tokens (usage credits). Allowances, account credit, and plan differences change over time — check the FAQ and Settings → billing. A dedicated Plans and tokens guide will cover this when Account & billing Help ships. This article does not hard-code prices or token counts.

Tips

• Confirm the Portfolio dropdown before you generate when you manage more than one site.
• Paste the full job Description first — thin postings produce weaker tailored drafts.
• Prefer Generate resume after you update portfolio content or the saved JD so the DOCX reflects current material.
• Open the DOCX and edit locally before submitting — treat AI output as a strong first draft, not a final send.
• Cover letters need Pro (ai-cover-letter); upgrade prompts appear on the cover letter controls when your plan does not include them.

Troubleshooting

Generate cover letter opens an upgrade dialog

• Cover letters need Pro (ai-cover-letter). Upgrade from the dialog or open Settings → Billing.
• Resume generation does not use that gate — try Generate resume if you only need a resume DOCX.

No download button after I generate

• Wait for Generating resume… or Generating cover letter… to finish; success shows a toast and switches the button to Download.
• Confirm the Portfolio dropdown still matches the portfolio you generated for.
• Network or temporary AI errors show a toast — try again.

The DOCX looks off for this job

• Confirm the Portfolio dropdown matches the site you meant to use.
• Open Edit on the card and verify Description includes the full posting.
• Use Regenerate Resume / Regenerate Cover Letter from the card menu after fixing portfolio or JD content.
• Check token / credit availability on the FAQ or Settings → billing if generation keeps failing.
